The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.
He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.
He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
