Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such drugs should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
