European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
