Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
