Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
