An Compassion of Strangers: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Land the Role That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a companion. Because my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the dining hall, where we got some food, took a seat, and started talking to fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did, and I shared that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – close to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, returning to the canteen that after dark. The Iraqi student approached me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but immediately informed my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she responded: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in numerous aspects. I would never have had the bravery or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that job in New York led me to a position in Switzerland where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
