A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
